The mission of the Wildland Fuels Division is to serve the citizens of Carson City everyday with pride, commitment and compassion.  Specifically, the Wildland Fuels Division takes the responsibility of preparing and defending Carson City from the threat of wildland fires.  This is accomplished by being prepared to respond to wildland fires and performing fuels reduction projects throughout the community.  The Wildland Fuels Division will plan, train and work to ensure we are continually reducing the threat of major wildland fire to the citizens of Carson City.

Since 2006, Wildland staff have been providing defensible space inspections to residents at no cost.  Through a grant funded by the Bureau of Land Management, staff conduct hazardous fuels assessments of properties within the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI).  The inspection includes an assessment of defensible space, vegetation management, and construction standards based on the University of Nevada Reno’s Living with Fire Program and pending 2024 International Wildland Urban Interface Code (IWUIC). This CWPP promotes community involvement and collaboration by identifying opportunities that strengthen communication and support between agencies and the public that will help support and expand the concept of Fire Adapted Communities through the Firewise USA Program. Create Fire Adapted Communities that can withstand an inevitable wildfire and minimize the potential for catastrophic loss of life or property.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firewise USA® Program is a nationally recognized program promoting and encouraging residents to learn about wildfire and how they can make their homes and communities safer.  For more information on the national program and to take action in your community click here. The Carson City Fire Department in partnership with the Nevada Division of Forestry is working with the communities to establish recognized Firewise Communities that reside in the wildland/urban interface.  Current Firewise Communities in the Carson City:  Kings Canyon Meadows Homeowners Association and Lakeview Property Owners Association. 

Once a community obtains national program recognition the Wildland Fuels Division support efforts to obtain funding to support defense zone fuel mitigation projects and opens the Fuels Collection-Trailer/Dumpster Program (normally only offered to residents residing in or adjacent the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI)) to all residents living with the Firewise community.

The purpose is strictly for disposal of "vegetative waste" or "yard debris/refuse" - plants that grow on the property. Construction materials, manmade materials & bags are not allowed. Do not place the waste in the trailer/dumpster in bags. Pine needles are allowed, but you must limit the amount of dirt. Please do not load the trailer/dumpster using a backhoe. Too much dirt can make the equipment too heavy to transport and the driver may be forced to dump the load back onto the property.
